Part three World Airline Directory

Edited by Günther Endres -- Flight International, 4/1/2003

Welcome to the third installment of the 2003 Flight International World Airline Directory. The directory is published annually in three parts over consecutive weeks, providing key information on over 1,400 airlines operating scheduled services or those offering significant charter services.

The directory is split into three parts alphabetically, with Part 1 covering A-B; Part 2 C-L and Part 3 M-Z. The selection criterion has been to list operators with one or more aircraft with more than 19 seats. Where justified by significance of service or national carrier status, airlines operating aircraft with fewer than 19 seats are listed, as are some helicopter companies which operate a significant number of scheduled passenger services. The listing includes scheduled or charter cargo operators of aircraft of a similar capacity to those satisfying the passenger aircraft criteria. The directory includes, wherever possible, non-jet commuter and regional operators which meet the inclusion criteria, but is not a complete guide to air-taxi services. Data incorporated in the directory includes contact details/addresses, partners and shareholders, management structure and fleet and route data, along with a brief description of an airline's operations. Telephone and facsimile numbers follow the international dialling codes – for example, the UK number +44 (20) 8652 3840, shows the country code, area code, and customer number. In-country dialling usually requires a caller to dial 0 to precede the area code, eg: 020 8652 3840.

Abbreviations include: () indicates the three-character ICAO airline designator code, [ ] indicates the two-character IATA code; CFO chief financial officer; COO chief operating officer; DGAC Direction Général de Aéronautique Civile; EVP executive vice-president; FAA US Federal Aviation Administration; JAA European Joint Aviation Authorities; LBA German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt; JAR Joint Aviation Regulation; SVP senior vice-president; VP vice-president.

Fleet data includes in-service and firm orders for turbine-powered aircraft and has been supplied by London, UK-based consultancy Airclaims, tel: +44 (20) 8897 1066; fax +44 (20) 8897 0300. Some information on piston-powered types is also included. Aircraft are recorded in the fleet of the airline for which they are being operated, rather than with the operator (if the two are different). Data is compiled by the Air Transport Intelligence team –Kelley Malcher, Lara McNamee, Trevor Mountford, Brandon Nothnagel and David Reynolds. Route data comes from from the OAG MAX database. Entries are correct up to and including January 2003.

Description National carrier of Malaysia, operating to 111 destinations worldwide.
History Founded as Malayan Airways by Imperial Airways, Ocean Steamship and Straits Steamship. In 1957, Malaya became an independent country and the airline was then restructured into a public limited company in 1958, owned by the Federation of Malaya and Singapore, Borneo Airways, BOAC and Qantas. With the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the airline was renamed Malaysian Airways in November that year. On the separation of Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia on August 9, 1965, the governments of Malaysia and Singapore took over majority control of the airline from BOAC and the other shareholders. Within the year the airline became known as Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). On April 3, 1971, a split in MSA led to the incorporation of Malaysian Airline System Berhad (MAS). The new airline officially began operations on 1 October 1972 as the national carrier of Malaysia. On 15 October 1987, the trading name was changed to Malaysia Airlines.

Description Large regional carrier operating codesharing feeder services under the Northwest Airlink banner to Northwest Airlines' Detroit and Minneapolis/St Paul hubs. The carrier serves 100 destinations throughout 26 US states and Canada.
History Started trading as a small fixed-base operator under the name of Mesaba Aviation, owned by Gordy Newstrom. Scheduled air services began on 4 February 1973, serving rural Minnesota communities. The Swenson family purchased Mesaba Aviation in 1977. Following airline deregulation in 1978, Mesaba entered into an Essential Air Service agreement, expanding to introduce commuter services in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa, using Minneapolis/St Paul as a hub. A short-lived partnership was established with Republic Airlines in 1983, and in the same year, Mesaba became a Part 121 operator. Mesaba became the first regional affiliate of Northwest Airlines when a codeshare agreement was signed in 1984. Conquest Airlines was acquired in 1994, and was subsequently developed into a jet operation named AirTran Airways. AirTran was spun off in 1995. In the same year Northwest Airlines acquired a stake in Mesaba.

Description One of Mexico's two principal airlines, it operates on a number of routes to Canada and the USA and to cities in South America.
History Founded as Compania Mexicana de Transportacion Aerea (CMTA). Competitors William Mallory and George Rihl acquired the company in 1924. In February 1929, Mexicana was acquired by Pan American Airways. The airline became the first foreign carrier to serve a point in the USA (other than a border town) when it started flights to Los Angeles on 3 January 1936. CMA gradually expanded its operations, and on 4 July 1960, one of five Comet 4Cs bought from the UK provided the first jet service between Mexico City and Los Angeles. Mexican Cresencio Ballesteros gained control of the carrier on 15 January 1968, but the Mexican government took a 58% majority stake during 1982, before the airline was privatised in August 1989. Since June 1996, it has been owned by Cintra, which also owns Aeromexico. Mexicana joined the Star Alliance in July 2000.

Description Lebanese flag carrier operating scheduled international services in the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
History Began operations between Beirut and Nicosia. Pan Am acquired a stake and management contract in September 1949, replaced in 1955 by BOAC taking a 49% stake. The association with BOAC was terminated on 16 August 1961. On 7 June 1963, MEA merged with Air Liban, which gave Air France a 30% shareholding, since relinquished. The full title was then Middle East Airlines Air Liban. In the same year it also took over Lebanese International Airways. Its present title was adopted in November 1965, when the airline was completely merged with Air Liban. Between 1975 and 1990, the Civil War taxed MEA heavily, with Beirut International Airport closed for about 800 days, and around half its aircraft lost and 40 staff killed. But the company survived, moving its operations to Cyprus for a time.

Description US carrier catering primarily for business travellers, serving 50 destinations in Canada and the USA from its Kansas City, Milwaukee and Omaha hubs. The airline received its first new Boeing 717 in February 2003 and is also acquiring Embraer ERJ-140s for its future mainline and regional growth. The 717s will initially add to the fleet and then start replacing McDonnell Douglas DC-9s.
History Kimberly Clark began providing corporate transport for its executives in 1948. In 1969 K-C Aviation was formed to provide aviation services. The 1978 Airline Deregulation Act led to K-C Aviation forming a commercial air carrier, which became the basis of today's Midwest Express, which started operations on 11 June 1984. In 1989, the carrier began construction of a heavy maintenance hangar at its headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a second hub, at Omaha, Nebraska, was opened in May 1994. An initial public offering of 5.14 million shares was completed on 22 September 1995, with Kimberly-Clark retaining 20% ownership until a secondary offering on 8 May 1996, when the remaining 1.16 million shares were offered to the public. Midwest Express's third hub – at Kansas City – came into operation from late October 2000. In January 2003 Midwest Express changed its name to Midwest Airlines, with a view to introducing a new corporate symbol in the near future. USANational Airlines operated low-cost economy and first-class flights from its main base in Las Vegas to Chicago Midway, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco using a fleet of Boeing 757-200s. It was founded by Michael Conway in April 1995 and backed financially by The Rio Hotel & Casino, Harrah's Entertainment and Wexford Management. Operations started on 27 May 1999. The airline's name originated from a carrier acquired by Pan Am in 1980, before entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1991. In June 2000 National announced it was considering a share placement and inital public offering for the third or fourth quarter of 2000, but filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 6 December, while continuing operations as normal. After failing to firm up a refinancing package, National Airlines ceased operations on 7 November 2002.
