Part one: World Airline Directory

Data compiled by the Air Transport Intelligence team - Kelley Malcher, Lara McNamee, Trevor Mountford, David Reynolds and Fabrice Tacoun, Edited by Günter Endres -- Flight International, 3/16/2004

Welcome to the first installment of the 2004 Flight International World Airline Directory. The directory is published annually in three parts over consecutive weeks, providing key information on over 1,400 airlines operating scheduled services or those offering significant charter services.

The directory is split into three parts alphabetically, with Part 1 covering A-B; Part 2 C-L and Part 3 M-Z. The selection criterion has been to list operators with one or more aircraft with more than 19 seats. Where justified by significance of service or national carrier status, airlines operating aircraft with fewer than 19 seats are listed, as are some helicopter companies which operate a significant number of scheduled passenger services. The listing includes scheduled or charter cargo operators of aircraft of a similar capacity to those satisfying the passenger aircraft criteria.

The directory includes, wherever possible, non-jet commuter and regional operators which meet the inclusion criteria, but is not a complete guide to air-taxi services.

Data incorporated in the directory includes contact details/addresses, partners and shareholders, management structure and fleet and route data, along with a brief description of an airline's operations.

Telephone and facsimile numbers follow the international dialling codes – for example, the UK number +44 (20) 8652 3840, shows the country code, area code, and customer number. In-country dialling usually requires a caller to dial 0 to precede the area code, eg: 020 8652 3840.

Abbreviations include: () indicates the three-character ICAO airline designator code, [ ] indicates the two-character IATA code; CFO chief financial officer; COO chief operating officer; DGAC Direction Général de Aéronautique Civile; EVP executive vice-president; FAA US Federal Aviation Administration; JAA European Joint Aviation Authorities; LBA German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt; JAR Joint Aviation Regulation; SVP senior vice-president; VP vice-president.

Fleet data includes in-service and firm orders for turbine-powered aircraft and has been supplied by London, UK-based consultancy Airclaims, tel: +44 (20) 8897 1066; fax +44 (20) 8897 0300. Some information on piston-powered types is also included. Aircraft are recorded in the fleet of the airline for which they are being operated, rather than with the operator (if the two are different). Route data is compiled by Air Transport Intelligence from the OAG MAX database. Entries are correct up to and including January 2004.

Aeris
France
Date operations started December 1990
Date operations ceased November 2003
History Aeris provided international charter flights from Toulouse, Marseilles, Nantes and Lyons on behalf of French tour operators such as FRAM, Nouvelles Frontieres and Corse Mediterannee. The airline also operated ad hoc services on behalf of scheduled carriers when required. In June 1999, Air Toulouse was acquired by AERIS, a joint venture company owned by French businessmen Jean Felix and Charles Rossignol and Philadelphia-based investment partners, Dimeling, Schreiber & Park. Following the acquisition, Air Toulouse changed its name to Aeris and also ceased scheduled operations on 1 July 1999 to concentrate on regional charter operations. In November 2001 Aeris and Westair decided to co-operate, and in April 2002 Westair was sold to Aeris in return for a 20% stake in Aeris. The airline filed for bankruptcy in October 2003 and was grounded on 8 November 2003 after the Tribunal de Commerce in Toulouse concluded that neither of two proposals for its acquisition was viable.

Aeris Express
France
Date established 2003 Date operations started 2 June 2003 Date operations ceased 8 November 2003
History Aeris Express was the new low-cost unit of Aeris. Operations started to Lourdes/Tarbes, Perpignan, Toulouse and Nice using Boeing 737-300s. Aeris was grounded on 8 November 2003 and subsequently the low-cost unit also ceased operations.

Date established 9 February 1923
Date operations started 15 July 1923
Description Russian national carrier operating international and domestic passenger services to more than 80 destinations in almost 50 countries. The airline is also the country's largest cargo carrier.
History Shortly after the end of the Russian civil war in 1921, the new government established the chief administration of the civil air fleet to oversee budding air transport projects. One of its first acts was to help found the Deutsch-Russische Luftverkehrs (Deruluft), a joint venture created to provide service from Russia to the West. Domestic aviation began around the same time, when Dobrolet, later Dobroflot, was formed in 1923 to provide services between Moscow and Nizhni Novgorod, later expanded to points throughout Russia and to Mongolia and Afghanistan. In 1932, all civil aviation activities were consolidated under the name of Grazdansij Wozdusnyi Flot, simply known as Aeroflot. By the end of the 1930s, Aeroflot had become the world's largest airline. In January 1971, the Aeroflot Central Administration of International Air Traffic was established within the framework of the International Airline Transport Administration, and became the industry's sole enterprise authorised to operate international flights. Abroad the airline was known as "Aeroflot - Soviet Airlines". In 1992 it was divided into more than 300 regional airlines, and international routes were operated separately as Aeroflot Russian International Airlines (ARIA). Two years later Aeroflot was registered as a joint stock company, and the government sold 49% of its stake to Aeroflot employees. In 2000 the company changed its name to "Aeroflot - Russian Airlines". Plans to join SkyTeam alliance in 2004.

Description Argentinian flag carrier serving 34 domestic and 20 international destinations in Europe, the Americas and the Pacific.
History Established from the unification of ZONDA, Aeroposta, ALFA and FAMA, which connected the Argentinian republic from the early 1930s. The airline's first international flight took place on 4 June 1946, a Shorts Sandringham flight to Europe. In 1962, Aerolineas Argentinas was the first carrier to operate turboprop and jet aircraft on domestic routes. Spanish flag carrier Iberia initially acquired an 85% stake in the airline in 1990, which has since considerably reduced, and American Airlines received approval in July 1998 to acquire a 10% stake in the parent company, which in turn gave it an 8.5% holding in the carrier. In June 2001, flights to seven international destinations were suspended and the airline went into administration. SEPI agreed the sale of its 92% stake in Aerolineas Argentinas to the Marsans Group in November 2001, which in turn committed to inject $50 million in fresh capital into the carrier with the intention of resuming long-haul services. On 6 November 2001 services resumed to Madrid, Spain. In 2002 the airline came out of administration after a Buenos Aires judge accepted its debt restructuring agreement with creditors.

Description Major Mexican international airline providing scheduled services to the USA, Europe and South America. A comprehensive domestic network is also operated.
History The airline was known until February 1972 as Aeronaves de Mexico and nationalised in 1959. In 1970, under a government plan, Mexican domestic airlines were rationalised into an integrated air transport system under the control of Aeronaves de Mexico and organised into eight smaller carriers, although this was later disbanded. Aeromexico was privatised in September 1988, and completed a successful financial restructuring in August 1995. In September 1999, Aeromexico and its partners Delta, Air France and Korean Air founded the SkyTeam global airline alliance.
