Motorola Sees Record Q4

In its first year with Ed Zander and without its semiconductor business, Motorola Inc. managed to bring sales up 35 percent to $31.3 billion, thanks in large part to a booming handset market.
The company Tuesday reported record sales, on a continuing operations basis, of $8.84 billion in Q4, an increase of 27 percent year-over-year, to cap off 2004.
"We are extremely pleased with the increases in sales and earnings we achieved this quarter,” said Zander, chairman and CEO, in a statement. “The response from customers worldwide to our portfolio of new products and technologies continues to be enthusiastic and is giving us market share growth in several areas."
Sales were up across all Motorola units, most notably in its Broadband Communications Segment and Personal Communications Segment (PCS).
Broadband pulled in Q4 sales of $691 million, up 25 percent compared with the year-ago quarter. For the full year, sales increased 26 percent. PCS, meanwhile, grew twice as fast with sales of $4.9 billion, up 51 percent in Q4 year-over-year and 53 percent for 2004.
The stellar news came with Motorola reporting Q4 wireless handset shipments of 31.8 million, up 42 percent versus Q4 2003 shipments, representing an estimated market share of 16.6 percent, compared to 13.4 percent in Q3 2004 and 13.7 percent in the year-ago quarter.
The company's outlook for the Q1 is for sales of between $7.5 billion and $7.9 billion, down quarter-over-quarter but up compared to sales of $7.4 billion in the Q1 2004.
