WiMax is in the air this week, as Airspan Networks today announced the $5 million expansion of an agreement with Yozan for WiMax deployment in Tokyo.
Airspan will commence deliveries in the last quarter of 2005. With the expansion, the contract is now valued at $16.7 million.
The project uses Airspan's software-upgradeable radio technology in a product packaging called MicroMAX-SDR. Customers on the network will use a range of Airspan subscriber units, including Airspan's EasyST, a unique self-installable indoor WiMAX customer premises device.
“Yozan will be the first company to roll out Japan's largest high-speed wireless broadband network, beginning with a service launch in Tokyo in December 2005,” said Sunao Takatori, president and CEO of Yozan, in a statement. “We chose to work with Airspan Networks precisely because they are a leading provider of WiMAX equipment."
Intel also announced WiMax plans Thursday in its newly launched "Digital Communities" initiative, which aims to take wireless to complete cities.
