Boz, Keithley, NI win T&MW awards
Rick Nelson, Chief Editor -- Test & Measurement World, 2/9/2006 10:33:00 AM
ANAHEIM, CA. When Zafer Boz first received an e-mail about winning Test & Measurement World's Test Engineer of the Year award, he thought it was a joke. John Clark, an engineering colleague of Boz at STMicroelectronics, had to work hard to convince Boz the award was real. "I was very surprised and very pleased," Boz said at Test & Measurement World's annual award ceremony held here today.
The award carries with it a $20,000 educational grant that Boz hopes will help establish joint programs between Ankara University, where the native of Turkey completed his undergraduate degree, and Surrey University, where he is completing his master's degree while serving as principal test engineer at STMicroelectronics' wireless business unit in Reading, UK. He said he hopes to complete his master's program this semester and then pursue a PhD.
Boz was one of six engineers profiled in our September 2005 issue, and he was chosen from among those six by reader vote.
"I feel very lucky to have been selected as one of the six finalists and be along side five other very experienced and respected engineers," he said, adding "I feel extra lucky to get the votes of readers from America and all over the world," and he thanked his friends for their support, including Clark, his colleague, and ST engineering manager, Terry O'Sullivan, his boss.
He added, "I would like to thank [award sponsor] National Instruments for the $20,000 award," and he thanked electrical-engineering professor Ahmet Kondoz of Surrey University, who will help Boz use the grant to support cooperative efforts with Ankara University.
Boz also said, "I would like to thank my family for their understanding and support when things are very busy."
The Test & Measurement World March cover story will provide more details on what keeps Boz busy.
Publisher Russ Pratt and Eric Starkloff, National Instruments marketing director, presented the award to Boz. Also during the ceremony, chief editor Rick Nelson took the stage to announce the winners of two product awards. Nelson announced that Keithley Instruments' 2400 SourceMeter has received Test & Measurement World's Test of Time award, given annually to a product that has provided state-of-the-art service for at least five years. He also announced that the National Instruments PXI-5922 has been voted by readers as the Test Product of the Year. (Read related story.)
