No electronics recycling here

Is your community's recycling program up-to-date?

Martin Rowe, Senior Technical Editor -- Test & Measurement World, 3/1/2006

 Martin Rowe

I recently discovered firsthand the difficulty of recycling. After dismantling several old computers, I intended to recycle some of their parts. I carefully separated metal and plastic parts wherever possible, removing hardware such as posts, plates, cases, plug-in boards, and even socketed ICs.

I called the Department of Public Works in the Massachusetts city where I live. It turns out that the DPW will pick up computer monitors and TV sets for recycling but, to my dismay, not computers or their parts.

"Just throw it in the trash," said the DPW representative, "There are places that will recycle old computer parts, but I don't know who they are."

The only parts that I can reuse in new computers are a few screws. I kept them, and reluctantly tossed the rest of the parts in the trash.

T&MW contributing editor Brad Thompson fared better. He volunteers at a Vermont-based nonprofit computer-recycling and refurbishment center. Brad reports, "Many of the local organizations that use lots of PCs are migrating to flat-panel LCDs as displays. We receive quite a few CRT displays, many of which are still somewhat functional but don't pass our tests. As prices decline further, we'll see even more."

Do you have any stories about recycling electronic equipment? If so, please pass them on to senior technical editor Martin Rowe.
